Whitefish Backcountry

Dear Friends of Whitefish Backcountry:

After some thorough investigation and some long soul searching, Whitefish Backcountry will not be offering classes for the upcoming 2010/2011 season. I am sure you all know of the economic conditions across the country, as well as the uncertainty for companies for this coming year. Also, There is a wolf overpopulation crisis in our area making it economically impossible for us to get insurance coverage into the backcountry. This latter issue is somehow controversial, but I am looking at it from a strictly business perspective.

Please, be safe this winter and have fun. Check with us next year in the fall and hopefully we be up and running to carry the message to all.

Welcome to Whitefish Backcountry!

If you're a backcountry traveler looking for backcountry education, you've come to the right place! We offer wilderness medical courses, backcountry skills courses, AIARE avalanche awareness presentations and AIARE avalanche training courses. Our hope is to provide educational opportunities locally to the residents of the Flathead Valley, reducing the cost and travel time involved in obtaining this type of education.

Our goal is to reduce the amount of accidents and fatalities relating to unsafe backcountry travel techniques in our area, an area which is rich with beautiful terrain and full of outdoor enthusiasts who love to access it. If you’ve been putting off that avalanche course, don’t let it happen again this year.

Whitefish Backcountry is an AIARE Course provider, offering Level 1 and 2 courses for the ‘09/’10 season. AIARE course providers provide you with the knowledge and tools you'll need to manage your risk in avalanche terrain. Whether you're a newcomer to the backcountry, an advanced recreationist or a seasoned professional, AIARE has a course that can improve your decision making skills. AIARE courses are designed as a unified progression from Level 1 through Level 3 with each course building on existing skills.
