Whitefish Backcountry’s skills courses provide training for the use of equipment necessary to begin learning about backcountry travel. Appropriate safety gear and functional clothing not only have to be selected and worn, but the traveler must be familiar with their use before taking avalanche training and backcountry travel courses. No one wants to be fumbling with equipment or cold and wet while trying to apply safe travel techniques and make critical decisions in avalanche terrain. You will become familiar with the use of transceivers, probes and shovels, as well as climbing skins, convertible bindings, etc. You will also be given tips on putting in a skin track, uphill and downhill kick turns and recognizing possible obstacles in your path. Student/teacher ratio 4:1
